Throughout history there have been many lists produced of ‘great and famous black people’ supported and endorsed by non Africans. Typically the criterion has been limited to recognising those Africans who were entertainers, media or sport personalities. In many cases these people are simply being rewarded for long serving or diligent commitment to their designated occupations. Others are rewarded by virtue of their being selected by european governments for a position of authority.

Characteristically, the most praised are those Africans who reject their heritage and devote much of their lives promoting the assimilation of African people into european culture. These people serve as living endorsements of how to progress through life by living a life of moral free servitude. It is these politically apathetic people that the British educational system promotes as compromised role models for African children.

An AFRIcon is different, an AFRIcon is a self determining African who has deliberately worked to achieve positive political, social, economic or cultural benefits for African people. Many times this means the person has selflessly sacrificed their own economic stability, independence and often liberty to achieve uncompromised change towards equality and social justice for African people. Their stories are often hidden, distorted or perverted by a eurocentric media. This gallery seeks to reverse that historic injustice.
