“Most of the history of African people throughout the world is told through slavery, a short period in our history, considering that we are the oldest of the world’s people.”
John Henrik Clarke

A significant and core principle of African Remembrance is that it is not framed by or limited to the european enslavement of African people. Whilst African history includes the injustice and travesty of enslavement, there are substantial and significant elements of our history that have occurred outside this era and it is essential and indeed respectful that the people and culture outside this element of history are also acknowledged and remembered.

Remembrance is an on-going necessity and integral to the progression of African people and culture. Our African Remembrance gallery fuses remembrance with the future by reminding us of our past in order to form practical solutions for the way forward.

African Remembrance Day - 1st August

Ligali is a supporter of African Remembrance Day organised yearly by the African Remembrance Day Committee on 1st August.

The African Remembrance Day Committee have been organising African Remembrance Day (ARD) since 1994. Every year, African people come together to commemorate the forced removal and enslavement of African Ancestors; to mourn the death of millions of Africans who were sacrificed to a cruel and unjust system and to pay homage to those who resisted and survived. ARD is a time for healing, reflection and renewal of the global African family. Every August 1st, African Remembrance Day, they link hands with the world-wide African family in the Caribbean, the Americas, the Orient, Asia, Australasia and our home continent, Africa, to reflect on the lessons and continuing challenges that have resulted from over 500 years of African enslavement.
